Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

If you have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), tried several anti-depressant medications with poor results, or if you prefer a non-medicated and non-invasive treatment for your depression without the side effects of medication, TMS may be perfect for you. This revolutionary technology is an alternative treatment option for patients with treatment-resistant depression.

Our advanced TMS center has helped hundreds of patients in the South Jersey area beat their life long depression. Our psychiatrist and TMS specialist, Dr. Srisai Gowda, believes that neuromodulation is the future of mental health care. This means altering and strengthening the connections between different parts of the brain through noninvasive treatments, like TMS. At Shore Clinical TMS we have found this intervention to be very successful, leaving patients satisfied and happier overall.

How does TMS work?

In patients with depression, the electrical activity in specific areas of the brain is shown to be reduced. Using controlled magnetic pulses targeted at these areas, TMS aims to re-awaken these cells, thereby increasing brain activity to more normal levels. The magnetic pulses induce an electrical current within the brain which stimulates the cells into activity.

Within just a few weeks, patient’s find that they are feeling much better than they did when trying various medications. They report feeling more mentally clear, motivated, relaxed, and happy overall. With TMS, there is no limit to progress you can make.

Shore Clinical TMS & Wellness Center offers both MagVenture repetitive TMS machines and Brainsway DeepTMS machines. Both machine’s are safe, effective, and offer shorter treatment sessions than other TMS machines.

Our practice strives to treat every patient as an individual, and makes sure to personalize TMS therapy protocols. Based on your individual history, goals, and life circumstances, Dr. Gowda creates a TMS treatment design that will get you the best results possible. Throughout your treatment, we closely monitor your progress and adjust the therapy regimen as needed.

Benefits of TMS

The actual TMS procedure is convenient, quick, and tolerable. You will be seated in a comfortable chair, with music playing and relaxing entertainment on a TV in front of you. The trained TMS technician will place the magnetic coil on your head, ensuring stimulation is happening in the appropriate area of the brain. You may feel tapping on your head under the treatment coil and hear a clicking sound. On average, TMS sessions take between 10-30 minutes, depending on your personalized protocol.

You will remain awake and alert throughout treatment, conversing with our compassionate TMS technicians.  Following your session, you will be able to drive home and you can resume normal activities for the rest of the day.

TMS has very few known side effects. The most common side effects are mild scalp discomfort or headaches during treatment, but treatment should not interfere with your normal activities.

Overall, transcranial magnetic stimulation is a great solution for those who have found antidepressants to be ineffective. In the same way that exercise is used to improve the health and strength of your muscles, TMS is used to improve the health and strength of your brain.
